There has long been a need for a really up-to-date book about four-stroke tuning from the performance viewpoint, which makes reference to current production engines, both car and motorcycle. The Author has aligned his first-hand practical experience in this field with current theory in engine design and has extended this into other allied areas such as carburettors, fuels, ignition systems, exhaust systems etc. The book contains a wealth of data including basic engine and carburettor specifications, amongst other tabular material and line drawings interspersed throughout the text. This book was revised early in 1985 mainly to include more up-to-date specification information relating to the car and motorcycle engines listed in the appendices. The Author's interest in modifying engines stemmed from his love of driving very fast. As he couldn't afford a Porsche 911S he had to resort to hotting up a Ford IO5E Anglia to give 911 type performance. The research involved and the practical experience gained the hard way led to further involvement with racing cars and racing engine workshops,learning all the time. It was then but a short step to start building engines for other people's race, rally and road cars. This book represents the Author's experience gained from working on engines of all kinds for 17 years, 14 of them spent tuning and modifying high performance and racing engines. He is now intent on unravelling the mysteries surrounding cylinder head design and turbocharging, being convinced that further advances in four-stroke technology will come from these two areas.
